Dedicated on November 14, 1920, the World War I Memorial is a plaque on a boulder with the inscription: "Peace to the Honor and Glory of Victory. 1914-1919. The men and women of Wakefield who served in the World War and in memory of these who made the Supreme Sacrifice." (29 names follow.)

Twenty-nine men from Wakefield were killed in World War I and this monument was erected to memorialize their sacrifice and to honor the other citizens who took part in the war. It was dedicated in 1920 by a parade which began at the armory and marched to the Common led by Maj. Edward J. Connelly, Commander of the Richardson Light Guard when war was declared.

Wm. H. Cartland, the owner of one of the first icehouses in Wakefield, accepted the memorial in behalf of the families of the 29 who died. His son was one of the first.
